Understanding TPACK Model

 25/04/2024 Thursday

In this session, we learned about the TPACK model which deliberately stands for Technology, Pedagogical, And Content Knowledge. This model or framework was developed by Punya Mishra and Matthew J.Koehler of Michigan States University in 2006. It was developed mainly to ensure the successful integration of technology in the classroom. Unlike SAMR model, this model aspires for the integration of all the three knowledge dimension (content, pedagogical, and technology) whereas SAMR model don't demand the pedagogical knowledge. The content knowledge is about the extent of knowledge that one have as a teacher to ensure that the lesson is deliver well and as expected (pedagogical knowledge-the way teacher deliver the lesson). Finally, the technological knowledge is about the appropriate integration of technology in the classroom to ensure quality teaching and learning in the classroom. After that, we explore on why it is important to integrate TPACK model in teaching and learning in the classroom. The notable importance's are: it connects three important points (i.e. TCK) on education making them comprehensive by visualizing them with a mental framework, provides teachers with the opportunity for them to develop professionally enhancing the quality teaching and learning. Of all, it promotes student-centered learning environment thereby providing support in covering 21st century skills. Then, we were ask to frame a lesson plan incorporating the components of TPACK model.

Lesson plan no: 02

Subject: Science

Topic: Natural and Human-made Things

Grade: IV

Time: 45 minutes

Teaching Learning Materials:

Images, video clip, internet with google docs, PowerPoint

ICT model: TPACK model

Teaching method: Collaborative learning

Previous knowledge:

Learned about the things in the surrounding

Lesson objectives:

  • By the end of the lesson, each student will be able to:
  • define natural and human-made things clearly in their own words without the help of a teacher
  • write at least two differences between natural and human-made things without referring the textbook
  • apply the concept of natural and human-made things in their daily life

Lesson Introduction

Teacher will recapitulate the lesson and then introduce the new topic (Natural and human-made things). The teacher will provide content knowledge by inquiring the students about following concepts:

What comes to your mind when we say natural things?

Do you know some examples of human-made things?

After that teacher will give a heads up on what is mean by natural and man-made things. The video link which shows what is natural and man-made things with examples.

Lesson development

The teacher will further explain the concept with the help of images (examples of natural and man-made things found within and in the surrounding). Give a clear explanation on why some of the things are known as natural while others are known as man-made.

Examples of man-made things

Activity

Instructions

The teacher will divide the students into group of four or five members

Ask the students to classify the things into natural and man-made things

Correctly classify the given things as natural and man-made things.

(Chair, table, moon, tree, flower, leaves, whiteboard, water, pencil, eraser)

Natural things

Man-made things

 Follow up

Ask the students to write the differences between natural and man-made things with an example each.

 Lesson closure

To sum up the lesson, students will solve the quizzical questions
